Typing lessons for kids, from the home row up
The short answer
Brainimo's typing game is an 8-level touch-typing course for kids, played on a computer with a real keyboard. It starts on the home row, then adds the top row, bottom row, capital letters, common words, sentences, numbers and speed. Each lesson shows which finger to use, and passing lessons earns stars toward real rewards.
What do the 8 typing levels teach?
The eight levels go in this order: home row, top row, bottom row, capital letters, common words, sentences, numbers and speed. Each level only uses keys your child has already learned, plus the new ones it introduces. The speed goal rises gently, from 6 words per minute on the home row to 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13 and finally 15 words per minute on the speed level. To unlock the next level, your child passes 2 lessons at the goal speed.
How does a typing lesson work?
A lesson is 5 short lines of 20 to 40 characters to type exactly as shown. An on-screen keyboard is colored by finger, and a tip says which finger to use for the next key, like "Use your left index finger." A lesson passes at 90 percent of keys right. It pays 3 stars at 97 percent and the goal speed, 2 stars at 93 percent, and 1 star for any other pass. After each lesson your child sees their speed, their accuracy and the keys to practice.
Can my child learn to type on a tablet or phone?
No. Brainimo's typing game needs a computer with a real keyboard. On a phone or tablet, the game tells your child that typing is a computer game and to come back on a computer. That is on purpose: touch typing is a skill for physical keys and fingers resting on the home row, and tapping a screen does not train it. The other Brainimo games are made to fit a phone screen.
Does the typing game work with other keyboard languages?
Yes. Each of Brainimo's 7 languages has its own 8 levels on its own keyboard layout: QWERTY for English, the Hebrew standard layout, Brazilian ABNT2, Latin American Spanish, German QWERTZ, French AZERTY and Arabic.
How do typing stars turn into real rewards?
Games, chores and real rewards all run on the same stars. Stars from typing go into the same balance as stars from math, spelling and the missions you set at home. Your child spends them at the Prize Counter on real rewards you chose and priced. Each request waits in your Approvals list, and nothing is handed out until you say yes.
How it works
- On a computer, your child picks a typing lesson at their level.
- They type 5 short lines with the finger shown for each key.
- A passed lesson pays 1 to 3 stars; a new level adds 5 bonus stars.
- Your child asks for a reward at the Prize Counter.
- You approve it and give the reward in real life.
What you control as a parent
- You can set your child's typing level with a slider, without a test.
- You can run a short level check to pick the starting level.
- You set the daily limit on stars from games, from 10 to 60 a day.
- You choose the rewards and their star prices.
Questions parents ask
Does the typing game read the text out loud?
No, by design. The instructions are read aloud by a recorded voice, but the text your child types is never read, so they learn to read and type it themselves.
Are there ads in Brainimo's typing game?
No. Brainimo has no ads and no chat, and the parent area only opens for a grown-up.
What happens if my child fails a typing lesson?
They get no stars for that lesson, see how many keys they got right against the 90 percent needed, and see the 3 keys they missed most. The game suggests going a little slower and trying again.
